Andere doen inderdaad nog wat voorzichtiger: Red Bull expected to announce Perez as Verstappen’s team mate for 2021

Autosport.com meldt het ook, dus ik geloof er in.
Mooi. Liever iemand die Max het vuur aan de schenen legt dan iemand die op anderhalve seconde rijdt.

Zij zouden het moeten weten toch?
Is there anything that we associate more closely with intelligence than curiosity? Every intelligent species on Earth is attracted by the unknown. Our mythologies are full of riddles and mysteries and divine knowledge. Even the word apocalypse... Even the word apocalypse means revelation. It seems like our ancestors always imagined that even at the very end we would solve one last mystery.
Perez to partner Verstappen at Red Bull in 2021, as Albon becomes reserve driver
2020 has served up one final big driver market move, with the news that Sergio Perez will replace Alex Albon as Max Verstappen’s Red Bull team mate in 2021. Albon, whose position had been under consideration for some time, will step back to become the team’s reserve driver.
Having lost his drive at Aston Martin (nee Racing Point) to Sebastian Vettel earlier in the year, it looked like Perez might have to spend 2021 on the side-lines, even after his spectacular maiden win in Sakhir.
But in a move that will likely cause more celebrations in the streets in Perez’s native Mexico, Red Bull have opted to snap up the services of the 30-year-old, as they bid to take the fight to Mercedes next year in machinery that will be largely similar to that used in 2020.
Perez has proved himself one of F1’s fastest and most consistent performers during his 10-year stint in Grand Prix racing, scoring 10 podiums and one victory, despite never enjoying truly front-running equipment.
A former Ferrari academy driver, Perez’s career has taken him from Sauber to McLaren to Force India/Racing Point across 191 starts. The fourth place he achieved in this year’s drivers’ standings represents his best ever placing and was achieved despite missing two races due to contracting Covid-19.

Renault announce shock departure of F1 team boss Abiteboul ahead of Alpine rebrand
Renault have announced F1 Team Principal Cyril Abiteboul is leaving the company, ahead of the team’s relaunch as Alpine for this year.
A long time Renault employee, Abiteboul has been in sole charge of the F1 team since 2017, but is now leaving the company altogether, following a shake-up by new CEO Luca de Meo, who joined from SEAT last year.
Laurent Rossi, the Director of Strategy and Business Development of Groupe Renault, is taking over the new CEO of Alpine, which will also see him assume control of the F1 team, and report to De Meo.
“I would like to thank the Groupe Renault for having trusted me for many years, particularly with the relaunch and reconstruction of the team since 2016,” said Abiteboul.
“The solid foundations of the racing team and the entities in France and England built over these years, the strategic evolution of the sport towards a more economically sustainable model, and more recently the Alpine project which provides a renewed sense of meaning and dynamism, all point to a very fine trajectory.
“I would like to thank Luca de Meo for involving me in the construction of the Alpine Business Unit and I wish the new structure every success.”
De Meo added: “I would like to warmly thank Cyril for his tireless involvement, which notably led the Renault F1 Team from the penultimate place in 2016 to the podiums last season.
“His remarkable work in F1 since 2007 allows us to look to the future, with a strong team and the new Alpine F1 Team identity to conquer the podiums this year.”

Renault have not been able to reproduce the title-winning success they enjoyed in the mid-2000s since rejoining F1 as a full constructor in 2016, though they did finally make it back on to the podium in 2020 with three top three finishes between Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon.
Fernando Alonso is rejoining the Enstone-based outfit for this season, replacing Ricciardo, who moves to McLaren, as Renault swap their name and yellow colours for Alpine and blue, red and white of the French flag.

In 2020, F1 became the first truly international sport to restart following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the experience gained and safety measures established last year hold F1 in good stead for 2021, the ongoing situation regarding Covid-19 has meant it is not feasible to begin the season in Melbourne.
The good news, however, is that the Australian Grand Prix will now take place from the 18th 21st November following an agreement between Formula 1 and the Australian authorities that shows the importance of the race in Australia to Formula 1 and their partners in Melbourne.
As stated previously, Formula 1 expects fans to return to the grandstands and the exclusive Paddock Club for the 2021 season.
It has been a busy start to the year at Formula 1 and we are pleased to confirm that the number of races planned for the season remains unchanged, said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.
The global pandemic has not yet allowed life to return to normal, but we showed in 2020 that we can race safely as the first international sport to return and we have the experience and plans in place to deliver on our season.
It is great news that we have already been able to agree a rescheduled date for the Australian Grand Prix in November and are continuing to work with our Chinese colleagues to find a solution to race there in 2021 if something changes.
We are very excited to announce that Imola will return for the 2021 season and know our fans will be looking forward to the return of Formula 1 after the winter break and our revised season opener in Bahrain. Obviously, the virus situation remains fluid, but we have the experience from last season with all our partners and promoters to adapt accordingly and safely in 2021.
