    [Multi] Starfield

    Bethesda announces space-faring RPG Starfield

It's been rumored to exist for years, but tonight Bethesda finally confirmed it.

Near the end of Bethesda's press conference at E3 2018, Todd Howard put to rest rumors that have existed for years and announced Starfield. The oft-rumored game is speculated to be set in the Fallout universe, albeit much further into the future. Obviously that makes sense, considering Starfield is said to be a space-faring RPG, something confirmed by the short teaser trailer which showed a space station orbiting a planet.

There's not much else to it other than a brief mention that it will be singleplayer. No release date, no concrete information, but it's still an exciting prospect. "It's our first wholly original franchise in 25 years," Howard explained. "Starfield is a game that we have spent years thinking about and working on. Something we feel uniquely positioned to pull off and that we're incredibly excited about."

It's not much to go on, but it'll be interesting to see what, if anything, Bethesda will say in the near future about Starfield.

What Is StarField & Why Did Bethesda Even Announce It So Early?
Bethesda is on a roll of “What the fuck Todd?” with their E3 announcements and are making us wonder why they even announced Starfield so early at all.

As we wrote during E3 about TESVI, we begin to wonder further on why Bethesda even bothered announcing Starfield at all. Sure, it’s nice to know they are working on new projects, especially a new IP, which is the first for them is 25 years. It’s a big step for sure, and we’re excited to see what it is, what it’s about, and how it will play in comparison to their other franchises. The biggest issue we have with the announcement though, is the fact that Todd himself said the game may not even release this generation. So, what the Fuck Todd?

    So What is Starfield Exactly?

The internet is ripe with speculation, and even some supposed “leaks” from a 4chan user in 2017 claiming to be close to the project. Albeit, not everything he said has come to pass in order, and we’re just hoping his date of TESVI in 2023 is complete hogwash. Although, the fact The Elder Scrolls VI is still in pre-production, I wouldn’t be too surprised if that’s accurate… What the fuck Todd? Anyways, that same article is from February of this year, well before the game was confirmed, so it’s possible at least some of his information is accurate… right? Or, perhaps we was just going off the trademark filed in 2013, and renewed in 2016… who knows. Let’s dig deeper shall we?

    In short, he states:

    • The game will feature a skill system more akin to Skyrim through augmentations
    • More action based combat
    • A dialog system similar to New Vegas
    • Dystopian work with Cyberpunk mixed in
    • 12 companions similar to those in Fallout 4, which can all be romanced/married
    • Starfield will feature 5 main quest-lines, the one you get based on which faction you choose. One of which is the “loner” faction

It’s all a bit vague, and there’s no way to know if any of this is true or the ramblings of fan theory. He was apparently right about Fallout 4 VR and Skyrim VR announcements at last years E3, so perhaps there’s a small twinge of truth to his statements. At the same time, this stuff is all over a year old, and we know that games go through some massive changes over development. It’s possible all of this has been cut or altered by now, or will be in the future. If the hint that it’s not releasing this generation by Todd is anything to go by.

What Hard Truth’s Do We Actually Know?

From what we heard at their conference, the first thing of note is that Starfield is a, “brand new, next generation, single player game.” It seems odd to call it that specifically when then gen isn’t completely over yet, but we have a feeling it will be on both this gen and next gen simultaneously. He also said that this is Bethesda’s first, “wholly original franchise in 25 years.” Which says a lot about their company, while at the same time has us excited to see what they can create outside their niche. Other than that, they didn’t give us much, so thankfully they gave more details, though still sparse, in outside interviews.

In one such interview with Geoff Keighley, Todd Howard has said that Starfield is in production, and that it is in a playable state. This gives us hope that it won’t be too long before we at least get to see the game in action, just don’t expect to play it yourself any time soon.

    Announced Too Early

In the end, it seems like the only reason they announced Starfield so soon was to avoid any potential leaks, and to be in control of what players see and when. We all know what happened with RAGE 2 when Walmart leaked it early and how hilariously Bethesda responded to it. It’s unfortunate that they announced the game so early, (not to mention TESVI) because it obliterates the reputation they had for announcing games and releasing them in short order. It would be a different story if Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI released during next year some time, but given how far out from release they are, it’s a different story. At the end of the day, we don’t know much about the project, other than what we’ve said above. All we can do is wait for them to give us more details at a later date and keep playing Fallout 76.

Starfield space travel is "like flight in the '40s, it's dangerous" says Todd Howard

We got some Starfield details at E3 after all

We knew Starfield wouldn't be making a proper appearance at the Bethesda E3 2019 conference, but we did get some new information on the game from an unlikely source: a sit-down between Bethesda boss Todd Howard, E3 Coliseum producer Geoff Keighley, and SpaceX founder Elon Musk. In particular, as our friends at PC Gamer reported, Howard discussed how space travel works in Starfield - and how perilous it can be.

"Traveling in space in our game, I want to say it's like flight in the '40s, like it's dangerous," Howard said. "It's still dangerous to go and explore, even though lots of people do it." But while the risks of space travel in Starfield are comparable to early flight, Howard also stressed that the game is set in the far future. And if you're worried that Starfield will be a technical sim like Kerbal Space Program - which is a great game, but not everyone's bag - put those worries to rest. Howard also said "we have to gamify it some so that it's not as punishing as actual space travel."

We still don't know much about Starfield, but we do know it's a single-player sci-fi RPG, not a hyper-realistic space sim. So while space travel will clearly be a critical part of Starfield, I don't think managing your hull's interior, rationing fuel, calculating return orbits, or similar technical details will be a big part of the game. My impression is that Starfield will present players with hazards to avoid and risks to manage without overwhelming them with dials and resources. I'm picturing air locks, solar flares, asteroid collisions and things like that, but that's just speculation on my part.

Whatever Starfield has in store for us in the great vacuum of space, we won't find out for a few years at least. Bethesda is actively working on Starfield and parts of it are even playable at the company, but Howard has repeatedly advised players to be "very, very patient" when it comes to Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6.

Totaal geen trek in deze 'it just works' game.

    I second that.

Report: Starfield First Look Surfaces via Leaked Images

While the big Bethesda news the past week is Microsoft’s acquisition of the entire company and its IPs, new Bethesda news has surfaced thats not connected to that, and it’s our first look at Starfield!

For those not familiar with the brand, Starfield is the first new Bethesda IP in 25 years, setting itself to be a massive RPG set in space. There has been no confirmation whether the game will feature multiplayer elements just yet, but that hasn’t stopped us from reporting about it. On 4chan, an anonymous member posted what they claim to be our first look at Starfield via images!

Image showing a character out in space. We can see the UI, which features a health and stamina bar, along with an oxygen meter. The next one below is a model of a spaceship.

It’s hard to judge whether these are real or not, though given this is 4chan and all we suggest you take this “leak” with a grain of salt. We’ve reached out to Bethesda about the images’ legitimacy and will update the post if we hear anything back.

Starfield seemingly targeting 2021 release, Bethesda considering summer reveal

The latest rumor regarding Bethesda’s major next-gen sci-fi release seems to suggest it could be revealed this year, with Starfield targeting a 2021 launch date (if Covid-19 doesn’t get in the way).

This time, the rumor comes from industry veteran and VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb, who has got a history of spilling the beans about unannounced projects.

During a Dealer Gaming stream, Grubb noted that he believes there is a ‘90% chance’ the game will be revealed around E3, and then subsequently launched sometime around November. It stands to reason, then, that Bethesda could be be revealing the game around E3 time at its own event.

As is now customary for a Grubb comment that gets spun out into stories, the journalist has since clarified his comments on Twitter. “Can we not make it sound so certain,” he replied to a Resetera thread stating his comments as fact. “I gave a percentage. Here’s a better headline: Microsoft and Bethesda want to unveil Starfield this year, but people want lots of things”. It’s worth noting that the percentage in question was indeed 90%, though.

Following Bethesda’s $7.5 billion acquisition by Microsoft, there has been mass speculation that neither Starfield nor The Elder Scrolls 6 will come to platforms other than PC and Xbox, but that has yet to be confirmed by Bethesda.

Starfield was revealed at E3 2018 and is set to come out before The Elder Scrolls 6. It will also be the first game to show off “the biggest overhaul on Bethesda’s engine, maybe even larger than Morrowind to Oblivion,” as per Bethesda’s own Todd Howard.

‘Starfield’: Todd Howard discusses Bethesda’s new space-based RPG

The game is ‘the Han Solo simulator,’ says Bethesda Managing Director Ashley Cheng.

    "It's like 'Skyrim' in space."

That’s how Bethesda Game Studios Executive Producer Todd Howard described the upcoming game “Starfield” in an exclusive video interview with The Washington Post. “Starfield,” in development since 2017, represents the first new IP in 25 years for Bethesda, the video game studio behind the critically acclaimed action role-playing series “The Elder Scrolls” and “Fallout.” The new space-based role-playing game will be released Nov. 11 of 2022 for PC and Xbox Series X and S.

Because of major technological leaps since “Skyrim,” the last Elder Scrolls installment from 2011, Howard said “Starfield” will be much more robust than that title, which won numerous game of the year awards. The first video footage of “Starfield,” which kicked off the Microsoft/Bethesda joint presentation during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) Sunday, shows a fraction of the breadth of this brand new universe. How big could it get? Bethesda Managing Director Ashley Cheng compares the game to “Star Wars.”

[The latest news and game reveals from E3 2021]

“For me, ‘Starfield’ is the Han Solo simulator. Get in a ship, explore the galaxy, do fun stuff,” said Cheng, who’s been with the company for 21 years.

Like so many Bethesda trailers, there are hints at the studio’s inspirations throughout the game’s reveal video. The beat-up starship, Frontier, and the many control buttons within emit a “Fallout” vibe. Howard said the choppy black and white beginning is an homage to NASA’s first moon landing on July 20, 1969, incidentally the same day Howard’s brother was born.

Keen interest in NASA was always part of Howard’s life, a fascination that inspired him and his family to visit Cape Canaveral during the height of the space program. “Then growing up in the ’70s with ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Battlestar Galactica’... I took a great interest in it for a long time,” Howard said.

    Ashley Cheng, Bethesda Managing Director

According to Howard, in “Starfield” players will join an organization dubbed Constellation, the last group of space explorers. At the outset, players will choose their character’s background, with many options for customization that will impact how some things in the game unfold.

Istvan Pely, the game’s lead artist, dubbed the look of the game “NASA punk,” Howard said.

“[Pely] knows what all the buttons do on the ships. Even though it’s science fiction, your mind can sort of draw the line all the way back [to NASA]," Howard elaborated. "It all should feel lived in, even for a ship.” The environment in the ship isn’t fancy, as demonstrated by the curiously packaged Chunks, a kind of MRE, displayed in one of the trailer scenes. Howard said its contents were a “mix of processed space food,” probably primarily potato.

In addition to being the next major RPG for Bethesda, the game figures to be one of the first major must-play games for Xbox since Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, for $7.5 billion earlier this year. In a wide-ranging, hour-long interview, Howard and Cheng spoke about the merger, how Bethesda’s employees operated through the pandemic, the difficult-to-process death of ZeniMax founder Robert A. Altman, and whether the release date may still move for the company’s first new game over a decade.

    Crafting a futuristic fantasy

During the interview, Howard sat at home in front of cherry wood bookshelves bearing a figurine of “Fallout’s” iconic Pip-Boy and an Indiana Jones idol and ark. (Bethesda and Lucasfilm announced they were working a new Indiana Jones game in January.) In his answers, Howard was thoughtful, descriptive and at times, effusive. But with the space exploration RPG still 18 months away, Howard didn’t want to reveal all of the particulars. When asked about a plant growing in the background of a spaceship shown in the trailer, he demurred. “Obviously, today I don’t want to spoil too many things.”

The massive amount of “things” that are included in the game are stored in an internal Wiki at Bethesda, a library of all things “Starfield” to which many of the employees who work on the project have access. These include histories, backstories, starship architecture, pretty much anything a fan (or an employee) would geek out about.

The initial idea for “Starfield” may well have begun when Howard was a teen trying to make games on his Apple II computer. He got as far as creating characters and a title screen for his own interplanetary game when the computer ran out of memory.

LEFT: "Starfield" concept art. RIGHT: According to Todd Howard, "Starfield" is "like 'Skyrim' in space."

Bethesda has created space-oriented fiction at various times during its existence, Howard recalled. “Believe it or not, Bethesda long ago had the rights to ‘Traveler,’ when I first started in [19]94. They quickly went away,” he said. “There’s a game we put out called ‘Delta V’ that was part of this ‘Traveler’ game. It ended up not really going anywhere. There was going to be a space game called ‘The 10th Planet’ in 1997. We actually had the ‘Star Trek’ rights at one point and made some games [in the 2000s]. I pitched a ‘Star Trek’ RPG at the time, which obviously we didn’t do.”

Howard remembered when “Morrowind" was popular and Bethesda was looking at next big things, he really wanted to do "post-apocalyptic, and that’s when we were able to acquire ‘Fallout’ [from Interplay].” A purely science-fiction game like “Starfield” took longer to come about, Howard said, because of the technical resources it demanded.

“We’ve known for a while that if and when we do something else, it would be science fiction,” Howard said.

“Starfield” effectively germinated a few years before the name was trademarked in September 2013. “There were no other names [we considered],” Howard said. "It had to be ‘Starfield.'”

Cheng said the studio now has a renewed vitality due to “Starfield.” “I love ‘Fallout,’” he said. “But after seven years of ‘Fallout,’ it’s a little nice to slip away to be working on something so new and fresh.”

“We struggled at first at finding ‘Starfield’s’ identity," Howard said. "We knew the style of game we wanted. But there’s so much science fiction, we didn’t have this existing franchise feel. We had to create that from scratch. What do the spaceships look like? What’s the tech level? What do people believe? What year is it really set in?”

A detailed timeline was created that included the history of “what happens every decade” and it was decided that the game would take place “300-ish years in the future," Howard said. "And now man is living amongst the stars: what does that mean?”

To help in the journey, there are a variety of robots. While there is nothing like Star Wars’s C3PO, Howard said there is one named Vasco (a nod to explorer Vasco da Gama) who is admonished (via a crew member’s wall scrawl) in the trailer because the robot forgot to procure a beverage called Tranquilitea. That name is yet another nod to NASA: Tranquility Base was the moon site on which the Apollo 11 astronauts first landed and walked.

A second “Starfield” video, narrated by Howard and premiered on The Washington Post, titled “Into the Starfield: The Journey Begins,” features Bethesda’s employees toiling away on the new title. While the production promotes the familiar idea of teams happily consumed in their novel work, it’s also a showcase for creativity and artistry. In one scene, Mike Butkus, the well-known graphic artist who did posters for films “Ready Player One” and “Django Unchained,” carefully airbrushes a character sketch by hand.

“It speaks to some romanticism about how [‘Starfield’] feels,” Howard said.

    The real-world backdrop

It has not been easy making a super expansive game during a pandemic.

“When covid hit, it literally didn’t matter where you sat," Cheng said. "We sent everybody home, and we were 450 plus studios [with people working from home], not just four.”

The past year-and-a-half was further marred when ZeniMax founder Robert A. Altman suddenly died in February of 2021. Sadness reverberated throughout the company, just like the shockwaves sent by one of Altman’s final achievements. While talks had taken place on and off for years, Altman had been instrumental in the sale of ZeniMax and its subsidiaries to Microsoft for $7.5 billion. “He drove the deal,” Howard said.

It’s still difficult for Howard or Cheng to talk about Altman’s passing, and both took a moment to collect their thoughts. After pausing, Howard said, “It’s hard to express — I don’t think I ever really will in a way people can appreciate — what he meant to everybody. He and I were very close for a long time.”

[Robert A. Altman, who went from bank president to video game company CEO, dies at 73]

Cheng recalled Altman’s guiding presence. “He was a great role model and a great leader," Cheng said. "I was heartbroken that he wasn’t there for the culmination [of the Microsoft deal]. He will be missed. He was a great man. I learned a lot from him — just about how to really trust your employees.”

Despite the challenges Bethesda has faced — primarily the pandemic, which has delayed numerous highly-anticipated games over the past 15 months — Howard firmly believes “Starfield” will meet its just-announced release date of November 11, 2022.

“We’re confident in the date," Howard said. "Otherwise, we wouldn’t be announcing it.”

LEFT: Bethesda Managing Director Ashley Cheng called "Starfield" a Han Solo simulator. RIGHT: A purely science-fiction game like “Starfield” took longer to come about, Howard said, because of the technical resources it demanded.

What comes next? A companion mini-game like “Fallout Shelter” is “unlikely,” according to Howard, but Bethesda is not ruling out a movie or TV series in the future. Bethesda is currently developing a “Fallout” TV show with “Westworld" producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy for Amazon Prime Video.

“It’s a great world to put a show in,” Howard said. "We took a good decade on ‘Fallout’, looking, listening to lots of takes and pitches. I think it’s about finding the right creative team. A lot of people want to do ‘The Elder Scrolls’ as well, but that’s not something we’re doing right now.”

Exploring various possibilities brings Howard and Cheng back to their upcoming sci-fi RPG.

“This is going to sound cliche, but I mean it," Howard said. "When you look up in the sky, there is this drive to know, what is out there? Are we alone? What are the origins of space and time and all of those things? What role does religion play in some of that as well? So, we do get into some big questions. I think a game like this is a good place to do that.

"There are movies and books that have done it as well, but we haven’t seen a game do it in this way. And we’ll see how successful we’ll be.”
