Google Stadia’s ‘negative latency’ will predict and input the player’s next move

You, [player name here], must be the pride of [player hometown here]!

In an interview with Edge, Google Stadia vice president of engineering Madj Bakar has stated that the streaming platform will cut down on lag by using ‘negative latency’, which will predict and input the player’s next move before they do (via PCGamesN).

Right. So, Stadia will use an algorithm to play the game at the same time as the player is. If there is a lag between the player and the server, Stadia will step in with a buffer of predicted latency that will reduce the effects of lag. This could be predicting the next move the player will take, but would also include strategies like increasing FPS to mediate poor performance due to latency.

Could a player take credit for a no-hit run of Sekiro if Stadia was sat in the backseat, stretching forward with its hand on the steering wheel? I’m erring on the side of, ‘well, no.’ Bakar also said that Stadia will redefine the criteria of excellence in technical performance through these breakthroughs in machine learning. ‘Ultimately, we think in a year or two we’ll have games that are running faster and feel more responsive in the cloud than they do locally,’ he explained, ‘regardless of how powerful the local machine is.’

Google Stadia is set to launch next month, with titles like Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Final Fantasy XV, Gylt, and Rage 2 available from the get-go. But, it’s just lost its big dog: Doom Eternal has been delayed into 2020.

    So proof us wrong!

    Google Stadia release date detailed

    Stream early access.

Google has given its streaming box Stadia a release date: 19th November 2019. The service goes live at 5pm UK time.

We already knew it would launch next month, and how much it would cost to jump on board now: £119/$129.

For that price you get the Stadia Founder's Edition, which packs in a Chromecast Ultra for 4K and HDR Streaming, a limited-edition Night Blue controller and a three-month subscription to Stadia Pro for both you and a friend.

Physical kits will be sent out in the order they were purchased, Google says.

This all comes prior to the free Stadia Base service, which you can choose to wait (or downgrade to) when it arrives sometime in 2020. This will be available for more devices (Chrome browsers, Pixel 3/3a phones) but is limited to streaming of 1080p/60fps.

Digital Foundry went hands-on with Google Stadia earlier this year and provided streaming analysis and controller impressions. Still confused how it will all work? We've got a complete Google Stadia games list and guide to getting started.

The Google Stadia controller’s biggest feature won’t be there at launch

You won’t be able to seamlessly move your Stadia controller between devices at launch. From the moment Google Stadia was first revealed, one of its biggest features has been the wireless controller.

The controller, Google explained, connects directly to the data centre through Wi-Fi, enabling the player to switch screens and continue playing with no interruptions. Google even demoed the feature on stage at the reveal event, but the company has now confirmed that it won’t actually be there at launch.

While you will be able to pick up where you left off on any platform where Stadia is accessible, the controller will need to be plugged into any device that isn’t Chromecast Ultra.

It’s going to work as advertised on Chromecast Ultra, but switching to a PC or a phone/tablet will require a USB-C connection at launch. This detail was actually mentioned (in fine print) in Stadia’s release date trailer, but only just been picked up on by 9to5Google.

A Google community manager confirmed it on Reddit, and later to The Verge, saying that the company wanted to get the TV experience right first.

Although the controller technically supports Bluetooth, that too won’t be available at launch. It’s not clear when either will be available to consumers.

Googleís Launch Lineup for Stadia Is Pretty Depressing

Revealed with enormous fanfare, weíve heard precious little about Googleís ambitious game streaming service recently, a service thatís supposed to launch early next week. Itís a little weird that until this morning, we didnít even know what games Stadia would be launching with, but in a blog post, the company announced its not particularly inspiring lineup.

On November 19, the day Stadia launches for the public, hereís what you can play:

    • Assassinís Creed Odyssey
    • Destiny 2: The Collection
    • GYLT
    • Just Dance 2020
    • Kine
    • Mortal Kombat 11
    • Red Dead Redemption 2
    • Rise of the Tomb Raider
    • Samurai Shodown
    • Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
    • Thumper
    • Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Yes, you read that rightóthree of Stadiaís 12 launch games are Tomb Raider re-releases. The only exclusive here is GYLT, a creepy adventure game from Tequila Works, the developers of Rime and The Sexy Brutale. One of the games, Thumper, is a music rhythm game that demands absolute precision from players, and two othersó Mortal Kombat 11, Samurai Showdownóare fighting games, where the presence of input lag would be a killer.

There are, however, other games coming before the end of 2019, including:

    • Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle
    • Borderlands 3
    • Darksiders Genesis
    • Dragonball Xenoverse 2
    • Farming Simulator 19
    • Final Fantasy XV
    • Football Manager 2020
    • Ghost Recon Breakpoint
    • GRID
    • Metro Exodus
    • NBA 2K20
    • Rage 2
    • Trials Rising
    • Wolfenstein Youngblood

No pricing has been announced for any of these games. Eventually, Google will offer a free service where you can login from any device and start playing, but for launch, youíll need to purchase what itís calling the Stadia Premiere Edition, a $130 package with a Chromecast Ultra, three months of their Stadia Pro subscription service, and a Stadia-specific controller.

A bummer for Google must have been the delay of DOOM Eternal into 2020; the shooter has consistently been one of the games highlighted as a showcase for the streaming tech.

Ahead of Google Stadia’s launch on Nov. 19, Google is hosting an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit. As that AMA reveals, Stadia will be missing some key features on launch day; those will start rolling out “as soon as one week after launch,” according to developers.

At launch, players will not have access to an achievements system — though achievements will be saved and recognized when the system launches “shortly” after Stadia’s release date — nor will Stadia support family sharing. Parents will be able to manage children’s “experience on Stadia” with parental controls through Family Link, but can’t share games. Developers said it’s a “high priority” feature that will launch in early 2020.

Stadia will also not support Chromecast Ultra devices that didn’t come with the Stadia bundle at launch — only the ones the streaming platform ships with. The Chromecast Ultra is used to stream games to 4K screens. It’s the only Chromecast device compatible with Stadia at launch. Google will update existing Chromecast Ultra devices “over the air soon after launch,” the developers said.

Google said its approach with Stadia’s launch is like how it does updates for Google Search, YouTube, and other services: a “gradual rollout and continuous improvement” based on user feedback. No games with Stream Connect — Stadia’s multiplayer experience — will be available at launch; developers said “the first game with Stream Connect” will launch before 2020.

Games that support State Share and Crowd Play, other multiplayer features, will be released next year. Likewise, Stadia Buddy Pass, which is a Founder’s Edition bonus, will be available two weeks after a user gets their bundle. (Buddy Pass lets players gift Stadia to someone else for a limited time.) No accessibility features are planned for launch, either; developers said “the team is working with game developers to set standards for accessibility across all games on Stadia.”

“Of course there are many more cool new platform features on the roadmap,” Stadia developers said. “We’re aiming to release new stuff weekly after 11/19.”

But it isn’t all bad news. Developers also announced something new, a Google Pixel and Stadia accessory designed to mount a phone to the Stadia controller. “We’ve designed a special accessory for Pixel and Stadia Controller,” Google said. “The official name is Claw and will be produced by our Made for Google partner PowerSupport. It will be sold exclusively through the Gstore and available for purchase in the coming weeks.”

The company also said Stadia users can use Google Play gift cards and credits to buy games through the Stadia app on Android.

This week, Google announced 12 games that will be available at launch. Fourteen additional titles are expected to be released by the end of 2019. Stadia will launch in 14 countries on Nov. 19 — but one Stadia user in the San Francisco Bay Area will get theirs hand-delivered by Stadia director of product Andrey Doronichev. Doronichev said during the AMA that he’ll drop off a Stadia on Nov. 19, “based on order received and how close you are to [his] house.”

He continued: “We can even play your first game together!”

Google Panics, Adds 10 More Games To Stadia's Launch Lineup

Perhaps spooked by the fact the only people who seem to care about the impending launch of their Stadia home streaming platform are those noting everything wrong with it, Google has at the 11th hour—this thing is released in two days, on November 19!—almost doubled the number of games that’ll be available when it goes live.

Originally intending to launch with 12 games, Google will now be releasing 22, with the extra ten—including titles such as NBA 2K20, Final Fantasy XV and Rage 2—having been bumped up from the list of titles that were originally expected to come to Stadia “later in 2019".

22 games is better than 12, I guess!

    IMPRESSIONS

    Googleís Stadia Just Ainít It

Googleís game-streaming platform Stadia is finally here tomorrow. Iíve had a week to tinker around with the Founderís Edition. It has the Stadia controller, a Chromecast Ultra, and a charger with a USB cable you can also use to plug into your PC or laptop for playing inside of a Chrome browser. Most of my experiences using Stadia have left me a little befuddled. Hereís the thing about me, readers: Iím a fool. I always want to try out the newest, latest thing to see if the hype is real. Thereís one question I keep returning to: Who, exactly, is this for? Itís in its testing stages, but could I recommend this to somebody in its current state? Nah, not really. Does it work though, Paul? Yup. Sure does.

In the interest of transparency, I do have a sibling who works at Google, but that in no way influences my thoughts on my time with Stadia this past week. There might be an awkward Thanksgiving conversation, but weíll be all right.

If youíve got all the right pieces in place, the Stadia service works pretty damn well. Redeeming the codes for games they sent us for review and being able to jump into them immediately without download waits was exhilarating. As someone who has to regularly wait for patches to download and shaders to get installed when my friends are all gathering online for some Modern Warfare multiplayer, I often feel like Iím stuck outside waiting in line for the party while I can hear my friends inside having a great time. Stadia just let me walk on in after redeeming a code for Red Dead Redemption 2. Thatís pretty cool.

Chris Person and I streamed the streaming service on our Twitch. Hereís the archive.

In order to play on your phone or on a Chromecast Ultra, youíll have to have the Google Home app, set the device up, and tie it to your personal account. The entire setup will be handled through the app itself, which worked pretty painlessly. You can cast games from your phone onto your TV the same way youíd cast a YouTube video. Using the app, you can also have a game youíre playing on your TV shift instantly onto your phone. It actually works really well.

Iíve tested it out on my 4K HDR TV at home, on my Pixel 3 (which I already owned), and my PC using a browser. With my gigabit home internet, it 100% works. The ability to transfer gameplay between my phone or my browser in seconds is wild. Our review unit came with a USB-C cable to hook up to my phone and a USB-C-to-USB-A cable to play in a Chrome browser on a PC or Mac. While it isnít as seamless a transition as they showed off at the Game Developers Conference in March, it works.

For third-person adventure games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Gylt, I didnít notice any input delay. Tomb Raider ran silky smooth on my TV. Red Dead Redemption 2 looked great but appeared to cap out at 30 frames per second. For all of that teraflop talk at GDC, I was a bit let down. Destiny 2 looked amazing on my TV at home and ran really well at 60 frames per second. There was hardly any noticeable input delay, but when it does happen, itís disruptive. Iíd stop sprinting and my character would take an extra step or Iíd miss a headshot that I swear I wouldíve gotten for sure on PlayStation 4 or with a mouse and keyboard (Editorís note: Sure, Paul).

These games work well as test cases, but I canít imagine someone actually shelling out money for this. Let me explain why. Ostensibly, my current setup is ideal for the StadiaóI am a fool who has gigabit internet, a 4K HDR TV, and even a damn Pixel 3. Iím somehow the exact person somebody at Google probably sketched onto a whiteboard in Stadiaís early stages.

But again, I ask: Who else is this for? Outside of the ability to stream games on a browser or your phone, I really canít find a strong selling point for playing games that you can largely get on other platforms already for around the same price. Stadiaís for tech-savvy people, but itís likely they already own an easier way to play these games.

Sure, itís a cheaper point of entry. The $129 Founders Edition gets you in the door for cheaper than other consoles, assuming you already have a TV, a computer or a Pixel phone at home. But the launch lineup leaves much to be desired with only 22 games, and all but one of the original 12óexcept for Gyltóhave been available on other platforms for some time now.

None of these games are particularly impressive as launch titles. Thatís where Stadia really fails to impress, and itís a big sore spot. Google says more games are coming by the end of the year, but this seems like a soft launch to get ahead of the shiny new consoles coming next year.

But if we call it a soft launch, this thing is cotton candy. On launch, Stadia wonít have some of its major social features like Stream Connect or Crowd Play. Thatíll come next year, according to Google. Stadia doesnít have an achievement system, current Chromecast Ultras wonít run Stadia, no family sharing, no buddy passes (sorry to ya mans) and some ďFoundersĒ wonít even get theirs until late November or early December.

I still have to wait to see how the Google Assistant button on the Stadia controller works since it wasnít available on our review units. The share button did let me save 30-second clips and screenshots to the Stadia app, but even then, I couldnít do much with them. They were just trapped inside the app with no way to download or share them. I mean, I could screenshot the screenshots? But likeÖwhy?

Another (highly specific) issue: Iíve been working with our officeís IT manager to get Stadia running on a TV, but if youíre planning on using these Chromecast Ultras at work, think again. Stadia, as of right now, just doesnít get along with enterprise networks. Unless your IT manager is really cool like ours (shoutout to Chris from IT) and is helping you set up a private network to test this on, youíre in for an adventure.

Ultimately, Iím left feeling lukewarm on Stadia. Playing in Chrome caps your resolution to 1080p, itís not really wireless with your phone, and there are a ton of missing features that people will just have to wait for. But when it works, you do get a glimpse of what being able to play games across multiple screens can look like, and you know what? Thatís pretty damn cool.

At the moment, Stadia feels about as substantial as a phone upgrade. Sure, itíll have a better camera and a few new features, but once you transfer stuff, itís the same user interfaceóthe same message threads and emails youíve been ignoring. This just felt like playing Destiny 2 on my PC or Red Dead Redemption 2 on my PS4 Pro. There arenít any real reasons to buy the service over consoles or a PC right now. Thatís one thing Google needs to address if they want this thing to be appealing, especially with a new generation of consoles looming.

However you feel about what a streaming service like Stadia could mean for game preservation or the modding scene, itís hard to deny weíre heading in that direction. It wonít happen tomorrow, but if all the services Iím currently subscribed to tell me anything, Stadia feels like a step in that direction. Itís tough for a console to make a good first impression, so Iím not counting it out just yet. In the meantime, Iíll keep playing most of my games the way I already do: on hardware running it locally, where all my other friends are.

Hereís what we know so far about the games available for Stadia at launch:
